Short Description

Cragieburn is a classic Mountain Biking Ride. 1 hour of climb up a gravel road followed by intense single track.

Description

It starts with a 1 hour ride up a gravel road that leads to the Cragieburn Valley Ski Field. This road winds up through native beach forest and past the bottom of scree slopes that you will bike over later on.

Along this road is a green metal gate that is always locked - this is a good resting place. When the road takes an aggressive switch back to the left you are nearly at the top of the climb.

The gravel road continues up through the Cragieburn Valley Ski field. The single  track starts on the left hand side of the road and ducks under the first piece of ski field cabling that is encountered.

The single track then continues south west along the valley wall, it crosses a couple (three?) of scree slopes and ducks in and out of native beech forest.

You will need a head for heights in order to cross the scree slopes.

On this section of the track tree roots abound, and many corners negotiate sharp bluffs.  There are rocky sections where it is safer to walk than to ride, as the fall could be deemed slightly terminal.

Leave the single track and take the signed posted route on your right, up to  Lyndon Saddle.  This a 20 minute climb up to the saddle and is where people usually stop for lunch.

From Lyndon Saddle, those feeling adventurous can take a spur track to the top of Helicopter Hill. This is a 20 minute walk and has great views.

It is possible to ride down from Helicopter Hill on a XC bike, this is a very technical ride, mostly over gravel with limited traction and large loose stones to contend with.

From the Lyndon Saddle the track splits in two, take the Right Hand track. The right hand track is a piece of single track and is known as The Chute. It descends back down to the car park, over beech tree roots and purpose built board walks.

The Chute ends at a four wheel drive track, turn Left/Down and follow this road for a fast ride to the car park. Watch for cars on this last section.

Getting there

Drive to the Cragieburn Picnic Area on State Highway 73 - ten minutes north of Castle Hill Village.

Park.

Ride back out to the road, turn left and cycle noth. Follow the Highway 73 for about 10 minutes -  until you encounter the gravel road that climbs to the Cragieburn Valley Ski Field.

Start the climb.

The ride ends back at the car park.
