Back up the Scree
When Graeme Read organises the ride, it is expected a grunty climb will be involved. He and a few others had ridden the McDonald Downs race the day before, so perhaps he was after something cruisy. The Mt Hutt Skifield Road was an obvious choice.

We should be glad that our track branched off the road halfway up. Eight of us made it up to Scott’s Saddle, where we skimmed off down the front side of the ridge.

When the track disappeared down a bluff, we shouldered bikes and trudged up scree back on to the intended ridge-top (pictured).

The track moseyed along pleasantly through tussock and scrub, before diving down into the bush. There were more than a couple of spills here. The track quickly became a steepish, reasonably technical descent. Some liked the steps and  roots, many of which were quite rideable; others soon grew weary of pushing and carrying, getting on and off the bike.

We finished in drizzle and drove home through a downpour. The entire ridehad been mild and clear, so we timed it well. It made us glad we had left drizzly Christchurch.

For those who like forest rides with plenty of steps, drops and zigzags, the Scott Track, off the Mount Hutt Road, is definitely for you.
