Mt White Bridge is where the Arthur’s Pass highway rejoins the Waimakariri and the railway line. Here a shingle road wanders off to nowhere really, roughly following the Waimak, its long lonely line on the map enticing to explorers by bike.

On a perfect Sunday, the first of spring, 14 riders enjoyed an undulating 40km. As we were not enclosed by bush, the high country scenery was always in front of us, culminating in the deep Poulter River gorge for our second round of lunch.

It should be noted that there were plenty of photo pauses, rest stops, two lunch breaks plus the cafe, and the odd moment where we hung around and checked out the view.

The relaxed and friendly vibe worked on the move too, with Mike assisting Joan on some of the climbs and Ian towing Vinnet for a couple of the last miles, when cramps had set in.

It was a day of things old and new: a steam train sighted on the plains and a couple of vintage Jaguars as we loaded up to return home. Vinnet had a few new pieces of gravel in some exposed flesh. One vintage item that didn’t make it this time was Danny’s old rigid clunker – finally replaced.

One more new thing sighted – Dave Ellen’s bald legs. Beauty treatment tips were discussed over lunch, although we still managed to get some food down.
