The Bridle Path was constructed in 1850 to provide a route between Lyttelton Harbour and Christchurch. Many Settlers lugged their possessions over this steep track to start a new life in Christchurch.
These days, the Bridle path is a shared use track for walking and biking and offers some good views of the Heathcote Valley and Christchurch. From Christchurch the track is a loose gravel road, that rises from the Gondola car park and climbs to a small stone shelter on the Summit road. The descent to the Lyttleton is just as steep and will tear through your brake pads. The bottom quarter of this ride is sealed. There are number of good cafes in Lyttleton. Pictures
